There are many different kinds of Model Kits out there and it would seem that many of these are just not suitable for people that are just getting into the hobby. What what kind of model kits are actually useful for people just getting into the hobby and what are the ones that you should avoud?

The Do’s

Lego
A lot of people do not think that Lego is a model kit at all, I would disagree which is why of course it is on the list. This kind of thing really is fantastic for a first time builder and this is because instructions are both simple and end results are brilliant. The reason this is top of the list for people that have no experience in model building is because even the hardest of models has easy instructions.

The Middle

RC Models
Okay so driving around RC vehicles like RC Helicopter is something that is pretty easy to do but the reason this doesn’t fall in the do’s category is simple because they are very hard things to build and repair and this is the reason why they are really hard to get into. If you are looking for a quick bit of fun then great but some of these are expensive and if you cannot repair them then you are stuffed. The same goes for things like Scalextric Sets.

The Don’ts

Matchstick Models
These types of models are great to get into if you can make them but they are very hard to actually start it up. The instructions are very hard to follow if you are getting a set and even harder to actually form together something for yourself.

If someone is starting up the hobby then you need to make sure you get the right thing.

The Relationship With Video Games And Model Kits

More and more people are playing video games nowadays and whilst I think that part of this is thanks to the recession and people getting more money out of a game than they do on a thing like a night out I will say that a lot of it is to do with the games having a much higher budget as well as being marketed very well indeed. They are also starting to appeal to more than one audience with things such as Plastic Model Kits even coming with some of the most important games.

Take the new and upcoming Halo Reach as an example for this one. Although the game itself is not out until September the beta is already running and if the marketing campaign is going to be anything like the Halo 3 one then millions are going to be spent, you can already pre-order three different versions of the game. The first one that fans can order is the game and the game alone. The next edition will consist of the game, in game Elite armour for the use in multiplayer an artefact bag, security badge and a Spartan II patch. The last edition of the game will be known as Legendary and it comes with a huge model of Noble Spartan team along with an in-game Spartan armour unlock.

It is this model that reaches out to the people that collect these kinds of things. I have seen many Mega Blok Halo figures out there that can be built too and I will admit to owning one of them. I have also seen a remote control Warthog (from the halo franchise) so there are already things like RC Cars starting to appear on the market.

So the next thing has surely got to be RC Helicopterbased on things like pelicans from the Halo universe so look out for all kinds of models being released around video games.
